تعتمد عملية تغيير لون العين على أن الفرق بين ألوان العين المختلفة هو وجود طبقة رقيقة من الصبغة تحت القزحية، فيقوم الأطباء باستخدام شعاع من الليزر يخترق قزحية العين ويقوم بإزالة الصبغة البنية ” الميلانين ” من الطبقة العليا للقزحية، وبذلك يحدث نقص في الميلانين، وبعد مرور عدة أسابيع ” حوالي ثلاثة أسابيع ” يبدأ لون العين في التحول من لونها البني إلى اللون الأزرق

و هناك طريقة أخرى للقيام عملية تغيير لون العين عن طريق استخدام مواد طبية يدخل بها في العين عدسة منطوية تتكون من السيليكون الرقيق الملون باللون الذي يرغب فيه الشخص ، وبعد ذلك تتفتح هذه الغرسة داخل العين لتغطي تماماً قزحية العين الأصلية وبذلك تكتسب القزحية لوناً جديداً .

ويؤكد الأطباء أن في حالة رغبة الشخص في استعادة لون القزحية الأصلية للعين يمكن استخراج هذه العدسة من العين فتعود العين للونها مرة أخرى.
